From Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton Airport to the cruise terminals

The nearest airports with flights from North America are Heathrow and Gatwick, because Southampton Airport is short-haul only. Heathrow is about 65 to 70 miles from the terminals, about 1 hour 25 minutes by road on ABP's figure. On 1 November 2026 a fixed-fare saloon from Heathrow was £150 for the car, or the coach was from £15.49 a person plus a short taxi.

From Heathrow or Gatwick, a pre-booked car is the simplest way to the ship, and a coach plus a short taxi is the cheapest. From Southampton Airport, take a taxi. No public train, coach or bus from any airport stops at a terminal door, so everything except a booked car or your line's own transfer ends with a second leg.

If you are flying in from North America, you will land at Heathrow or Gatwick, the nearest airports with those flights. If you are flying within Britain you have a real choice, because Southampton Airport is about 20 minutes from the ship. Check which terminal you need before you book a car, because the five terminals sit in two docks and your terminal can change by sailing date.

Which airport is closest to Southampton cruise port?

Southampton Airport is closest, about 5 miles away, but it has short-haul flights only. ABP, which runs the port, gives the drive times below. Road distances for Heathrow and Gatwick are ours, measured on 1 November 2026 with OpenStreetMap routing to all five terminals.

AirportRoad distanceDrive time, ABPSimplestCheapest, checked 1 November 2026

GatwickAbout 76 milesAbout 1 hour 45 minutesBooked car, £169 saloonFlixBus from £14.48, plus taxi

ABP says to allow extra time for traffic. Its overview page says Heathrow and Gatwick are just over an hour away, which is well short of the times on its own terminal sheets, so use the table. Our routing with an empty road gave about 1 hour 20 minutes from Heathrow and 1 hour 45 from Gatwick. Princess says to allow 1.5 to 2 hours from Heathrow.

ABP also lists Bournemouth Airport, about 45 minutes away, and we measured about 30 miles. We left out Stansted, about 130 miles by road, and Bristol Airport, about 85 miles, because we found no direct train or coach to Southampton published by an operator.

Where do flights from the US and Canada land for a Southampton cruise?

Heathrow and Gatwick are the nearest airports with North American flights. Heathrow's terminal guide puts American Airlines at Terminal 3, British Airways mostly at Terminal 5 with some routes at Terminal 3, and Air Canada at Terminal 2. Gatwick's own announcements name Norse Atlantic, Air Transat and WestJet among its North American airlines, though routes change by season, so check your airline.

Southampton Airport has no long-haul flights. ABP describes them as short-haul international and national, and the airport promotes one-stop connections through Amsterdam with KLM and through Dublin with Aer Lingus. If you can get a fare, connecting that way lands you 20 minutes from the ship instead of 90.

US and Canadian passengers usually need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, £20 on GOV.UK on 1 November 2026. See cruise documents for what else to carry.

How to get from Southampton Airport to the cruise terminals

Take a taxi. It is the only option that goes to all five terminals with one vehicle, and the airport says taxis may enter Dock Gates 4, 8 and 10 on cruise days.

Radio Taxis is the airport's taxi firm, with a desk in the terminal, on 023 8066 6666. The Radio Taxis figure is our arithmetic on ABP's distances, using the rate it published from 6 July 2026, not a quote. The airport's undated map says about £16 to £20.

Hampshire Taxi, which states it is licensed by Southampton City Council, lists one fixed fare for all five terminals. On 1 November 2026 that was £30 for a saloon, £45 for a 6-seat MPV and £49 for an 8-seat minibus, per vehicle. Pick-ups from 10pm to 6am add 15%.

The train leaves from platform 2 at Southampton Airport Parkway, which the airport says is 99 steps from the terminal. South Western Railway and CrossCountry both run it, and the airport's pages give both every 10 minutes and up to every 15. You still need a taxi from Southampton Central, so you handle your bags twice to save little.

The U1 leaves from outside the terminal, but the airport says all passengers must get off at the Dock Gate 4 stop in Platform Road and walk the rest. That is about 0.2 miles to Ocean from the gate and a full mile to QEII. It does not serve the Western Docks.

Uber also serves the airport, and its Southampton page warns that some airport trips carry a surcharge for parking. If your flight lands hours before boarding, the airport will hold bags for £6 a bag a day, checked 1 November 2026.

How to get from Heathrow to Southampton cruise port

A booked car takes about 1 hour 25 minutes and needs no change. The coach takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and leaves you near a taxi rank. The train is the worst of the three with cases, because it needs a coach to Woking first.

Booked car. On 1 November 2026 Hampshire Taxi's fare was from £135 for a saloon, plus Heathrow's £15 pick-up parking charge. It says the driver tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals. Celebrity warns that black cabs at Heathrow are expensive for this trip and recommends a pre-arranged transfer. We quote Hampshire Taxi because it states a Southampton City Council licence and publishes its fares. Other firms will quote too, so compare before you book.

FlixBus. At least 5 trips a day, from 09:25 to 21:55. It leaves the Central Bus Station for Terminals 2 and 3, and Terminal 5 bays 11 to 15. In Southampton it stops at Western Esplanade, the south side of the station, where there is a taxi rank. One checked bag up to 20kg and one 7kg carry-on are included.

National Express. The first daytime coach leaves Heathrow at 09:00 or 09:30, so an early landing means a wait.

That is the timetable valid from 1 November 2026. Fridays match the weekend for the first two coaches. National Express's page quotes a fastest 1 hour 25 minutes from Terminal 5 and 1 hour 40 from Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 5's stops are on the arrivals forecourt, 11 to 15. The hold limit is 20kg a case, and our train and coach guide has the luggage rules and the taxi from the coach station.

Train. Heathrow's own transport page sends you for Southampton on the RailAir RA2 coach, from Terminals 2, 3 and 5 to Woking Station. From there South Western Railway's fast train reaches Southampton Central in 49 minutes, once an hour on the timetable running to 12 December 2026. That is 89 minutes on board before any wait between the two, plus a taxi. RailAir says third and fourth adults and under 16s travel free on this route, which helps a family, but we could not read a fare to quote.

How to get from Gatwick to Southampton cruise port

Gatwick is further and worse connected, so a booked car makes more sense here than from Heathrow. ABP gives about 1 hour 45 minutes by road.

Hampshire Taxi says its Gatwick fare is fixed at booking and includes Gatwick's pick-up charges. The first 60 minutes after landing are free, then waiting cost £25 an hour on 1 November 2026.

FlixBus runs at least 5 trips a day from 07:10 to 20:35, from stop 6 at South Terminal and stops 4 and 5 at North Terminal. National Express says its service calls at Chichester, Portsmouth and Fareham on the way, which explains the time.

Gatwick's rail page lists Southampton among Southern's destinations but gives no journey time. Check your date on National Rail's journey planner, which shows any change. Whichever train you take ends at Southampton Central, and you still need a taxi from there.

Do cruise lines run transfers from Heathrow and Gatwick?

Several do, on sailing day only. Prices are rarely public, so ask for the fare a person and compare it with a car, which is priced per vehicle.

LineWhat it publishes
PrincessTransfers from Heathrow and Gatwick, with the flight cut-offs below
CunardAirport transfers are included with Cunard-booked flights, but not transfers between London airports. If you book your own flights, ask Cunard what it can arrange
P&O CruisesOn one-way fly-cruises, a complimentary coach between selected UK airports and Southampton may be available, with limited places
MSCSells airport and port transfers with a booking. Its page gives no Southampton price, so ask
Royal CaribbeanTransfers from the arrival airport on sailing day, bought about two weeks before sailing. Have your flight details ready

Royal Caribbean's UK reservations line for transfers is 0344 493 4005.

How long should you allow, and should you fly in the day before?

Fly in the day before if you are crossing the Atlantic. Princess recommends arriving at least one day before your cruise and says the ship will not wait for late guests, even after a flight delay. It suggests travelling to Southampton the day before, and asks anyone expecting to reach the port after 15:30 to call its Ground Services team.

If you do fly on the day, Princess sets these latest landing times for international flights:

AirportLatest landing before the ship departs
Heathrow5 hours
Gatwick5 hours 30 minutes

For a ship leaving at 17:00, that means landing by 12:00 at Heathrow or 11:30 at Gatwick. Other lines set a deadline at the port instead. Royal Caribbean says no later than 60 minutes before the published sail time. Your boarding pass may set an earlier slot, and that is the time to work back from.

Hampshire Taxi's advice for Heathrow is to land at least 5 hours before all-aboard, and to come the day before if you land after 10:30, sail early or have a connecting flight.

Our view is that a same-day flight only works with a booked car and a morning landing. By coach you add a wait at the airport and a taxi at the far end. A night in Southampton removes all of that for the price of one hotel room. See hotels near the cruise port.

What is the earliest flight home after a Southampton cruise?

Princess sets the earliest international departure at 7 hours after the ship's arrival at Heathrow. For Gatwick its page reads "7 and 30 minutes hours", which we take to mean 7 hours 30 minutes. Allow for taxis too, because the airport warns they may be very busy while ships are disembarking, so book one before you sail.

For Southampton Airport, Hampshire Taxi's £30 saloon fare, checked 1 November 2026, applies from the ship too. A train home is covered in our train and coach guide, and the parking guide covers driving instead.
