Southampton cruise port by train and coach, and the last mile to your terminal
Take the train to Southampton Central, then a short taxi. Fast trains from London Waterloo take about 1 hour 15 minutes, and no public bus or train reaches a terminal door. From the Midlands and the North, cruise coaches go straight to the ship for £83 to £150 return a person on 2026 prices, checked 1 November 2026.

The simplest way to reach a Southampton cruise terminal without a car is a train to Southampton Central, then a short taxi. The station is the closest to all five terminals. ABP, which runs the port, says no public bus stops outside a terminal, so every route ends with a taxi, a walk or a coach that takes you to the ship.
First check which terminal you need for your date. The five sit in two separate docks, and the walk from the station runs from 12 minutes to 50. Ships move between terminals, so use your boarding documents or the calendar, not the line's usual terminal.
This site is independent. It is not ABP, a rail company or a coach firm.
How do you get to Southampton cruise port without a car?
Use the train from most of southern England, and price a cruise coach first if you live further north. Fares in this table were read on the operators' own pages.
| Option | Typical trip | Price, checked 1 November 2026 | Where it leaves you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train and taxi | London Waterloo in about 1 hour 15 minutes | Waterloo from £10.10 Advance single, plus taxi | Southampton Central |
| FlixBus and taxi | London in about 2 hours 10 minutes | London from £5.99 one way, plus taxi | Western Esplanade, outside the station |
| National Express and taxi | London Victoria in 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 50 minutes, Birmingham in about 4 hours | London from £6.40 one way, plus taxi | Southampton Coach Station, Harbour Parade |
| Cruise Connect coach | Set pick-ups across the UK, for Cunard, P&O and Princess | Online quote | At the ship |
| Eavesway Cruiselink coach | Morning pick-ups in the North and Midlands, cruises of 7 nights or more | £83 to £150 return a person in 2026 | At the ship |
| Amore coach | Overnight from Scotland, cruises of 7 nights or more | £124 to £170 adult return | At the ship |
These are the lowest published fares, and South Western Railway says same-day tickets usually cost more. On 1 November 2026 National Express included a £1.50 booking fee in its figure, which it drops if you book logged in to My Account.
Which trains go to Southampton Central?
Four companies serve the station: South Western Railway, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway and Southern. South Western Railway runs the station and the London trains.
| From | Operator | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| London Waterloo | South Western Railway, direct | 1 hour 14 to 1 hour 17 minutes on fast daytime trains Monday to Saturday, 1 hour 26 at best on Sunday |
| Winchester | South Western Railway, CrossCountry, direct | About 16 minutes |
| Reading | CrossCountry, direct | About 50 minutes |
| Birmingham New Street | CrossCountry | Check the journey planner |
| Manchester Piccadilly | CrossCountry | Check the journey planner |
| Bournemouth | South Western Railway, CrossCountry, direct | From about 35 minutes |
| Portsmouth Harbour | Great Western Railway, direct | 45 minutes |
| Portsmouth & Southsea | South Western Railway stopping train, direct | About 1 hour |
| Brighton | Southern, direct | Check the planner |
| Cardiff and Bristol | Great Western Railway, direct | Check the planner |
London, Winchester, Reading, Bournemouth and Portsmouth times come from South Western Railway's timetables for 20 September to 12 December 2026, so look again for a sailing after that.
South Western Railway says Birmingham and Manchester have direct trains. Check your train on National Rail's journey planner. We could not read a published journey time for Brighton, Cardiff or Bristol. National Rail's engineering notices confirm Southern runs Brighton to Southampton Central and Great Western Railway runs Cardiff and Bristol to Portsmouth Harbour.
Train times from London Waterloo
Two fast trains an hour run from Waterloo on weekdays and Saturdays, leaving at about 5 and 35 minutes past the hour. Sunday has two an hour as well, but the first arrives two and a half hours later than on a Saturday.
| Day | First train from Waterloo | Reaches Southampton Central |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 05:18 | 07:00 |
| Saturday | 05:21 | 07:03 |
| Sunday | 07:53 | 09:34 |
CrossCountry is later on Sunday too. Its first train through Reading on that timetable reaches Southampton Central at 10:42, against 08:48 on a Saturday.
Published figures for the London trip vary. South Western Railway's page gives an average of around 1 hour 30 minutes, and Cunard says about 1 hour 20. ABP's cruise page says about an hour from central London, which is quicker than any train in the timetable.
How much is the train to Southampton?
South Western Railway advertised Waterloo to Southampton Central from £10.10 as an Advance single on 1 November 2026, and Southampton Central to Bournemouth from £4.50. National Rail says Advance tickets go on sale around twelve weeks before travel, and rail fares in England are frozen until March 2027.
An Advance ticket is valid only on the date and train printed on it. You can change it before departure, but on 1 November 2026 National Rail said a £10 fee may apply, plus any difference in fare. That suits the journey to the ship. It is riskier for the journey home.
Check for engineering works before you book
Weekend closures are the main risk on this line, and a replacement bus with cases adds time you may not have. South Western Railway's November 2026 list has buses replacing trains west of Southampton Central on Sunday 22 November, and lines closed around Eastleigh on 28 and 29 November. National Rail lists all lines closed between Southampton Central and Romsey or Bournemouth on Sunday 6 December.
On the Eastleigh weekend an hourly London train diverts through Guildford, Havant and Fareham and still reaches Southampton Central, more slowly. South Western Railway says journey planners update the night before and short-notice changes are likely, so check again the evening before you travel.
How far is Southampton Central from each cruise terminal?
Horizon and City are close enough to walk, Mayflower and Ocean are about 30 minutes, and QEII needs a taxi. Walks are from ABP's embarkation-day sheets. Road distances are ours, measured on 1 November 2026 with OpenStreetMap routing from the south side of the station.
| Terminal | Dock | Walk, ABP | Road, our measure | Worth walking? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horizon, berth 102 | Western | 0.5 miles, 12 minutes | 0.8 miles | Yes, with bags you can pull |
| City, berth 101 | Western | 0.6 miles, 15 minutes | 0.7 miles | Yes, with bags you can pull |
| Mayflower, berth 106 | Western | 1.5 miles, 30 minutes | 1.3 miles | Light bags only |
| Ocean, berth 46 | Eastern | 1.5 miles, 30 minutes | 1.8 miles | Light bags only |
| QEII, berths 38/39 | Eastern | 2.5 miles, 45 to 50 minutes | 2.3 miles | No |
The "worth walking" column is our view, and none of ABP's times mention luggage.
ABP's own pages disagree with those sheets. Its City and Horizon pages say about a mile from the station, and its Ocean and QEII pages say about two miles. South Western Railway calls Ocean just under a mile, and Cunard puts Ocean and QEII at about a mile. We use the sheets because they give a figure for each terminal and name the route. ABP's overview page recommends a taxi for QEII.
Can you walk from Southampton Central to the cruise terminals?
Yes to the Western Docks if your bags roll, and we would not try it to QEII. ABP says to leave the station by the south side, onto Western Esplanade, for all five terminals.
- Western Docks. ABP sends walkers through Dock Gate 10 for City, Horizon and Mayflower, even though drivers for Mayflower are pointed to Dock Gate 20. From the gate, Horizon is 0.2 miles, City 0.3 miles and Mayflower a full mile, about 20 minutes.
- Eastern Docks. Walkers use Dock Gate 4. Ocean is 0.2 miles from the gate, but QEII is another mile, about 20 minutes, after you have already crossed the city centre.
The two docks are separate, so a wrong terminal on foot is a long way to correct. Confirm the berth before you set off.
Is there a free bus from Southampton Central to the cruise port?
No bus reaches a terminal, and the one sometimes called free usually is not. Quayconnect runs between the south side of the station and Town Quay. ABP's Ocean and QEII pages call it a free bus, but Red Funnel, whose service it is, says it is free only for Red Funnel ticket holders, through ticket holders to Cowes and Senior Citizen pass holders. Everyone else paid a flat £2 return on boarding, checked 1 November 2026.
Red Funnel says it runs about every 30 minutes, from early morning to early evening. From the Town Quay stop, ABP gives these walks:
- Ocean, 0.4 miles, about 8 minutes, though ABP's Ocean page says 15 to 20 minutes
- City, 0.6 miles, about 12 minutes, through Dock Gate 8
- QEII, 1.5 miles, about 30 minutes
It saves little with cases. ABP says bus services for the Western Docks are limited, and Horizon and Mayflower have no stop nearby. The U1 bus to Dock Gate 4 is covered in the airport guide, because it starts at Southampton Airport.
How much is a taxi from Southampton Central to the cruise terminals?
Expect about £6 to £9 on Radio Taxis' published rate, or from £15 fixed in advance with Hampshire Taxi, both checked 1 November 2026. There are ranks on both sides of the station. The north rank is on Blechynden Terrace and the south rank on Western Esplanade, and ABP says taxis can drop you outside the terminal.
| Terminal | Radio Taxis day rate, our arithmetic | Hampshire Taxi fixed saloon, from |
|---|---|---|
| City, Horizon | £6 | £15 |
| Mayflower | About £7 | £15 |
| Ocean | About £8 | £15 |
| QEII | About £9 | £15 |
Radio Taxis' rate, effective 6 July 2026 and checked 1 November 2026, is £6.00 for the first mile and £2.40 a mile to 5 miles, from 6am to 10pm. At night it is £8.00 and then £3.00 a mile. An MPV has a £20.00 minimum. Those totals are our arithmetic on our measured distances, not quotes. Waiting, tolls and parking are extra.
Hampshire Taxi, which states it is a licensed private hire operator with Southampton City Council, was the only firm we found publishing a fixed fare for this trip. On 1 November 2026 it listed from £15 for a saloon with 2 large cases, £18 for an estate with 4, £22 for a 6-seat MPV and £28 for an 8-seat minibus. Those prices are per vehicle.
Rank cabs run on the meter. Southampton City Council sets a maximum table of fares for hackney carriages, in force from 17 March 2026, and does not regulate private hire fares. Uber's Southampton page lists Ocean Cruise Terminal at an average UberX price of £9, with no date or start point.
Visit Southampton lists these firms, and says pre-booking is strongly advised:
- Radio Taxis, 023 8066 6666
- West Quay Cars, 023 8099 9999
- Go-Mobility, for disabled passengers, 023 8000 6090
National Express to Southampton cruise port
National Express stops at Southampton Coach Station on Harbour Parade, not at the docks, so you finish with a taxi. Route 032 runs from London Victoria through Heathrow, and route 160 runs from Birmingham.
| Coach | Days | Leaves | Reaches Southampton |
|---|---|---|---|
| 032 from London Victoria | Saturday and Sunday | 08:00 | 10:50 |
| 032 from London Victoria | Saturday and Sunday | 09:30 | 12:20 |
| 032 from London Victoria | Monday to Thursday | 08:30 | 11:20 |
| 160 from Birmingham Coach Station | Every day | 08:40 | 12:40 |
Those are National Express timetables valid from 1 November 2026. Its London page quotes a fastest journey of 2 hours 30 minutes, and these morning coaches take 2 hours 50. From London the fare was from £6.40 one way, for travel from 14 September 2026 to 11 January 2027, checked 1 November 2026.
ABP says a taxi from the coach station takes about 5 minutes, and that there is a rank at the coach station and another at Southampton Central, about 0.3 miles away. Our road measure gives 0.8 miles to City and 2 miles to QEII, so expect that 5 minutes to stretch for the Eastern Docks. ABP's walks from here are 25 to 30 minutes to Ocean, City, Horizon and Mayflower, and 50 to QEII.
National Express's page mentions a free bus every 15 minutes between the coach station and the railway station, but the council's September 2026 transport map shows no such route, so plan on walking the 0.3 miles, about 6 minutes on ABP's figure.
The coach station has toilets and a coffee shop. National Express's station page says it opens from 08:00 to 16:30 every day, and its facilities directory says 08:00 to 17:30.
FlixBus to Southampton
FlixBus is the better coach for reaching a taxi rank, because it stops at Southampton Central Station, stop SF, on Western Esplanade. That is the south side of the station, where the rank is. From London it takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, with about 5 departures a day from 08:30 to 21:15, and fares were from £5.99 on 1 November 2026.
Make sure your ticket is not for the second Southampton stop, at Burgess Road by the university, which is much further from the docks.
Cruise coaches that go straight to the ship
These are the only coaches that drop you at the terminal. The catch is that they run for set sailings, from set pick-up points, and most need a cruise of 7 nights or more.
| Service | Lines | Pick-ups | Price, checked 1 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise Connect, by Intercruises | Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess | 50 points across the UK | Instant quote online |
| Cruiselink, by Eavesway Travel | P&O Cruises, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Fred. Olsen, MSC | North West, North East, Yorkshire, Midlands | £83 to £150 return a person in 2026, £88 to £160 on 2027 pages for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and MSC |
| Amore Cruise Connection | Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC | Glasgow, Bothwell, Gretna, Lancaster, Knutsford, Keele | Adult return £170 from Glasgow, £150 from Gretna, £124 from Lancaster |
Cruise Connect. P&O Cruises says its Select Price fare can include return coach transfers on selected Southampton round trips of 7 nights or more, and that changes must be made at least 35 days before departure. The service is subject to minimum numbers and runs on embarkation or disembarkation day only. Cunard's terms offer the coach as a Cunard Fare benefit on roundtrip Southampton voyages of 7 nights or more. One Cunard page says to contact Intercruises 30 days before departure and another says 35, so work to 35. Intercruises lists 0131 297 4391 on its own site, and the lines give 0344 338 8690.
Eavesway Cruiselink. Each route is tied to a sailing, so ask whether a coach runs on your date. On the 2026 P&O and Princess page, examples of return fares a person are £88 from Warwick, £95 from Birmingham North, £115 from Leeds and £150 from Newcastle. The Newcastle coach leaves Washington Services at 05:00, and Southampton arrival times show as to be confirmed. Eavesway says your bags go to your cabin and you check in with hand luggage only.
Amore Cruise Connection. The Glasgow coach leaves Buchanan Bus Station at 01:00. Its page carries no date, so confirm the fare when you book.
We found no South Wales or Bristol pick-up on the Eavesway pages we read. Those passengers should look at Cruise Connect or the direct Great Western Railway train.
Luggage rules on trains and coaches
The tightest limits are on coaches, which matters if you are packing for two weeks.
| Operator | Published allowance |
|---|---|
| National Rail, most trains | Up to 3 items free, as long as you can carry them yourself and there is room |
| National Express | 2 medium suitcases or 1 large, 20kg each, plus a small soft bag. Up to 3 extra items at £10 each single online |
| FlixBus | One checked bag, 50 x 80 x 30 cm and 20kg, plus a 7kg carry-on. Extra bags can be added when booking |
| Cruise Connect | Three medium suitcases, 23kg each, plus one small piece of hand luggage, on Cunard's luggage page |
National Express does not allow hard cases or wheelie bags on board, so they go in the hold at no charge. Its £10 extra-bag price was checked on 1 November 2026, and it rises to £15 if you book at a coach station or by phone.
South Western Railway says Southampton Central has no luggage storage, but it does have luggage trolleys. If you are killing time before a late train home, Visit Southampton lists Little Green Doors in The Marlands and Burlington House, which offers drop-off and collection to the terminal from 8am to 5pm.
If you live in Hampshire, Hampshire Taxi sells a luggage-only run from your home to the terminal bag drop, at £44.99 one way for one bag, checked 1 November 2026. It does not collect from outside the county.
Is Southampton Central step-free?
The station is listed as step-free to all platforms, but check the lifts before you travel. On 1 November 2026 National Rail and South Western Railway both showed lifts out of order between platforms 2 and 3 and the rest of the station, and between platform 4 and the footbridge. South Western Railway's refurbishment page says platforms 1 to 3 are finished and platform 4 was due to finish by October 2026, and Southern lists further lift closures on platform 2 from 3 to 5 November.
Southern says platforms 1 to 3 stay step-free from the Blechynden Terrace entrance, and platform 4 from Western Esplanade. South Western Railway's page puts Weymouth and Salisbury trains, CrossCountry trains to Bournemouth and Great Western Railway trains to Cardiff on platform 4. Book assistance on 0800 528 2100, which South Western Railway recommends doing at least 2 hours ahead.
Getting home from the terminal by train or coach
Book your taxi from the ship before you leave home. Each terminal has a rank, but Southampton Airport warns that taxis may be very busy while ships are disembarking, and Visit Southampton says pre-booking is strongly advised. The council's March 2026 trade forum records that its fare chart was updated to increase the charge from the docks, and we could not read the new figure, so ask before you get in a rank cab.
Give yourself room on the train. Hampshire Taxi suggests a train at least 90 minutes after your planned walk-off time, or two hours if you are in a later luggage group. On a Saturday, fast trains leave Southampton Central for Waterloo at 08:30 and 08:59 and take about 1 hour 20 minutes. Sunday's 09:25 reaches Waterloo at 10:51, and the 09:45 at 11:39.
An Advance ticket for a morning train is the part we would avoid. If the ship docks late, a missed Advance train means buying a new ticket.
If you are driving after all, see cruise parking. If you are flying in, use the airport guide. For a night near the docks first, see hotels near the cruise port.
